Client requests

Find material your firm has shared with you

Your firm says a document is available, but you cannot see it, or you want to understand what appears in the client portal.

Before you begin

  • Your own client portal account for the correct matter.
  • The document name or message from the firm identifying what it shared.

What to do

  1. Use the portal address supplied by your firm and sign in with the invited account. Open the intended matter. If your account has more than one matter, check the matter name before searching for a document.
  2. Open Documents and look for the title or filename the firm gave you. Read any message that accompanied it. A document you uploaded and a document the firm shared can have different review histories.
  3. If you find it, open the file and confirm that it is the version the firm intended you to read. If it does not load, record the filename and the message shown, then retry after checking your connection.
  4. If the material is missing, ask the firm to check the matter, intended client and sharing status. Give the title and the message that led you to expect it. Do not use another person's sign-in or invitation to look for it.
  5. If a document appears to belong to someone else or contains material you did not expect, stop distributing it and tell the firm promptly. The firm can investigate the classification and sharing decision with the correct context.

What you should see

You see documents that cleared the applicable access checks and were shared with you. The firm investigates missing or unexpected material.

Limits and unresolved problems

The portal is not a view of every document in the matter. Privilege classification, protective-order restrictions and the firm's sharing decision govern access. Privileged and work-product documents are withheld. On a multi-client matter, shared request progress does not expose another client's private answers.
