Before you begin
- Access to the document and its citation report.
- Any permitted release requires a licensed attorney at the firm and that attorney's stated reason.
What to do
- Read the hold report and identify the particular citation, quotation or failed lookup. Separate an adverse or unverified result from a check that was unavailable. A check that did not run cannot establish that the citation passed.
- Open the source and compare it with the draft. Correct a mistaken citation, repair an inaccurate quotation, or revise a proposition that the source does not support. Save the changed document before asking the system to check the version you intend to use.
- Run the available citation check again after making the correction. Inspect the new result rather than relying on the previous report. Case citations use CourtListener's public case law; the firm's independent research process still determines how to rely on an authority.
- If a result remains unverified and the interface offers a permitted release, the licensed attorney must decide and enter their own specific reason. Read the confirmation for the exact document and action. A generic instruction to get it out is not a substitute for that professional judgment.
- If the check itself cannot run, keep the document held and report the failure. That condition cannot be bypassed through an attorney release. After a permitted release or successful correction, inspect the resulting action status; release of a hold alone does not establish delivery, filing or service.
What you should see
The corrected saved version passes its required check, remains held for a stated problem, or has a permitted attorney release recorded with its reason.
Limits and unresolved problems
Only a licensed attorney at the firm can release an eligible citation hold. A failed or unavailable required check stays blocking. No negative signals found is the strongest treatment wording, not a citator opinion.
