Read the passage behind a sentence in a draft

A draft contains a citation or source link, and you need to verify the proposition against the underlying document before approving the text.

Before you begin

  • Access to the saved draft and its cited sources.
  • The relevant document must be readable; passage locations depend on the file format.

What to do

  1. Open the draft in the editor and select the sentence's source reference. Where BRON has a locator, the reader opens the cited passage. For a scanned exhibit, inspect the marked area on the original page as well as any recognized text.
  2. Read the sentence alongside the passage and surrounding context. Check names, dates, quantities, qualifications and the identity of the speaker. A sentence can point to the correct document and still overstate what that document establishes.
  3. Check which source version the reference describes. If the editor says the sources describe an earlier version, inspect your subsequent edits separately. Do not assume that a reference attached before a revision supports words added during that revision.
  4. For legal authorities, inspect the citation and quotation results as separate questions. A source existing does not prove a quotation is accurate. A treatment result of no negative signals found does not establish that a case is good law or replace the firm's research process.
  5. Correct the draft or its reference where needed, save the revision, and review the saved result again. If the passage cannot be located, open the source directly and record the unresolved locator issue. If the source itself cannot be read, leave the proposition unchecked until the read succeeds.

What you should see

The reviewer can distinguish what the source says, what the draft claims and which saved source version was inspected. Unreadable or unsupported material remains an open review issue.

Limits and unresolved problems

A link establishes a path to a source, not support for a proposition. Passage inspection does not independently clear a citation hold or approve an outside action.
